How it works

Zinc supports many proteins and enzymes. Its role in normal immunity does not make it a general treatment for infections.

Simplified mechanism map. It does not represent a proven treatment outcome.

What the evidence can tell us

Deficiency prevention is established. Effects of supplementation depend on baseline status, formulation and the outcome studied.

Safety and important limits

Excess zinc can cause copper deficiency and gastrointestinal symptoms. It can interact with certain antibiotics and penicillamine. More is not automatically better.

This is a learning guide, not a recommendation to begin a supplement. Baseline nutrition, medicines and health conditions affect what is appropriate.
