Mitochondrial and animal ischemia research
Evidence reviewed September 13, 2026.
Research overview and identity
SS-20 is an experimental mitochondria-directed peptide studied in membrane and bioenergetics models. It is a different compound from SS-31, so SS-31 clinical findings should not be used as if they were SS-20 trials.
Mechanism under investigation
Research examines interactions involving cardiolipin and cytochrome c in mitochondrial membranes. Preservation of cytochrome c heme coordination is a proposed way to maintain electron-transfer function during an ischemic insult.
What the studies report
A 2015 primary study investigated this mechanism in experimental systems and rats exposed to ischemia. SS-20 was associated with preservation of mitochondrial respiration and recovery-related bioenergetic measurements in the tested setting. [1]
Limits of the evidence
These results concern a controlled preclinical injury model, not established treatment of human kidney or cardiovascular disease. Timing relative to injury and the measured endpoint affect interpretation. The study does not validate clinical longevity claims or demonstrate equivalence between different mitochondria-directed peptides.
Matching research material to a paper
Check the material identity, formulation and analytical methods against the study methods. A product name or milligram amount alone does not demonstrate experimental equivalence. Published research does not establish the identity, purity or potency of a retail batch; batch-specific analytical documentation must be assessed separately.
