Human safety and pharmacology trial
Evidence reviewed September 13, 2026.
Research overview and identity
ACE-031 is an engineered activin receptor type IIB–Fc fusion protein studied as a ligand trap. It is not a short myostatin peptide, and findings for the clinical fusion protein require confirmation of the identity of any research material.
Mechanism under investigation
The receptor portion binds myostatin and related signaling proteins involved in muscle growth. Blocking several ligands can affect tissues beyond muscle, so this is broader than selectively turning off one muscle-growth signal.
What the studies report
A randomized, placebo-controlled study in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy examined safety and exploratory functional outcomes. The investigators reported trends in body composition and walking performance, but the walking finding was not statistically significant. The study was stopped because of nosebleeds and small dilated blood vessels, illustrating why biological activity and clinical usefulness are separate questions. [1]
Limits of the evidence
This early trial does not establish a muscle-building treatment, a reliable functional benefit, or long-term safety. Its findings should be read alongside its premature termination, small study population and exploratory endpoints. Claims about a research vial cannot establish equivalence to the study protein.
Matching research material to a paper
Check the material identity, formulation and analytical methods against the study methods. A product name or milligram amount alone does not demonstrate experimental equivalence. Published research does not establish the identity, purity or potency of a retail batch; batch-specific analytical documentation must be assessed separately.
