The DES designation matters because this material is distinct from IGF-1 LR3 and full-length IGF-1. The muscle-fiber and receptor illustration is a research motif and is not evidence of a localized muscle-growth effect.
Des(1-3) IGF-1 is an IGF-1 analogue lacking the first three amino acids. A 2001 cell study examined receptor activation using this analogue alongside other IGF forms. The work describes retained affinity for the type 1 IGF receptor with weaker affinity for IGF-binding proteins. This distinction makes the analogue useful in experiments that separate growth-factor receptor signaling from some aspects of extracellular binding-protein regulation.
The same study also found that IGF-binding protein-3 could inhibit receptor activation through a mechanism not explained solely by its affinity for the growth factor. That result is a useful caution against a simplified claim that reduced binding-protein affinity removes all regulation. Receptor phosphorylation, binding and downstream cellular measurements represent different endpoints. Their interpretation depends on the model and controls, and they do not establish a human dosing approach.
