Human studies of a specific complex preparation
Evidence reviewed September 13, 2026.
Research overview and identity
Cortexin is studied as a peptide-containing biological preparation rather than a single sequence-defined peptide. Its evidence must be interpreted at the preparation level, with attention to manufacturing and formulation. It is not Cortagen.
Mechanism under investigation
Published studies investigate neurological outcomes and proposed cytoprotective activity. For a complex preparation, a clinical outcome cannot be assigned to one peptide or one receptor without separate experiments that identify and test that component.
What the studies report
A 2014 multicenter, placebo-controlled study enrolled 272 patients with ischemic stroke and reported favorable outcomes with Cortexin as part of treatment. A later study of 490 patients compared intravenous and intramuscular formulations. Both groups received active Cortexin; placebo injections masked the route, so that study is not a comparison of Cortexin against no active drug. [1] [2]
Limits of the evidence
A favorable abstract does not resolve all questions about trial methods, independent replication, disability outcomes or long-term safety. The studies concern their specified clinical preparations and populations. They cannot certify that an SRP research vial has equivalent composition, clinical effects or suitability for patient care.
Matching research material to a paper
Check the material identity, formulation and analytical methods against the study methods. A product name or milligram amount alone does not demonstrate experimental equivalence. Published research does not establish the identity, purity or potency of a retail batch; batch-specific analytical documentation must be assessed separately.
