Why SS-31 Caught My Attention
A personal, evidence-aware look at mitochondrial research, what current science does and does not establish, and the larger habits behind my health transformation.

My Starting Point
I began this chapter of my life at 278 pounds. I wanted to regain control of my health, rebuild my confidence, and become more consistent—not just for a few days, but long enough to create real change.
Over time, I changed how I trained, ate, hydrated, tracked my progress, approached recovery, and held myself accountable. That larger process eventually brought me to 204 pounds.
These numbers reflect my overall health and fitness journey. They are not presented as an SS-31 result.
No single compound produced this change. My progress happened during months of strength training, daily movement, protein-focused nutrition, hydration, tracking, persistence, and continued effort to improve my recovery and sleep.
Why SS-31 Entered My Research
SS-31 caught my attention while I was learning more about mitochondria and the role they play in cellular energy. Rather than looking at it as a weight-loss product or a shortcut, I became interested in the reason scientists were studying a peptide designed to interact with mitochondrial structures.
People sometimes ask me what SS-31 “did.” The most honest answer is that I cannot isolate one variable from everything else I changed. My nutrition changed. My body weight changed. My training changed. My hydration changed. My expectations changed. My daily workload changed.
That makes my experience an anecdote—not a controlled experiment and not proof of cause and effect.
The biggest lesson from my transformation was not that one compound changed everything. It was that consistent actions, repeated long enough, changed me.

SS-31 is a name used in scientific literature in connection with elamipretide, also known during development as MTP-131. Research has focused on its interaction with cardiolipin and the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Mitochondrial cardiolipin
The FDA prescribing information for Forzinity describes elamipretide as a mitochondrial cardiolipin binder that localizes to the inner mitochondrial membrane.
One narrow approval
In September 2025, the FDA granted accelerated approval to Forzinity for improving muscle strength in qualifying patients with Barth syndrome.
Condition-specific findings
Evidence involving a rare mitochondrial disease cannot automatically be applied to weight loss, athletic performance, everyday fatigue, or healthy adults.
Not every endpoint succeeded
The FDA label states that the randomized trial was not superior to placebo on its primary walking and fatigue endpoints. Continued approval requires confirmatory evidence.
Important regulatory distinction
FDA approval applies to the branded prescription medicine Forzinity, for its specific approved population and indication. It does not mean that every material sold online under the name “SS-31” is an FDA-approved medicine.
It also does not establish SS-31 as a weight-loss treatment, performance enhancer, general energy treatment, anti-aging treatment, or replacement for care from a licensed medical professional.
My Personal Perspective
SS-31 was a research topic inside my transformation story. It was not the author of that story.
The clearest things I can document are the behaviors I changed and the progress I measured. I became more consistent in the gym. I paid closer attention to food and protein. I stayed active even on physically demanding work days. I tracked my weight. I kept showing up.
Personal impressions are harder to interpret. They can be influenced by expectations, training changes, sleep, hydration, calorie intake, weight loss, other substances, and normal day-to-day variation. That is why I will not turn my impressions into promises for another person.

What This Journey Taught Me
- A scientific mechanism is interesting, but it is not the same thing as a proven real-world outcome.
- A personal story can start a conversation, but it cannot replace controlled evidence.
- An FDA-approved branded medicine should not be confused with unrelated products using the same research name.
- One variable should not receive credit for months of training, nutrition, discipline, and behavior change.
- Good research communication includes limitations, uncertainty, and results that did not meet expectations.
Where I Am Now
Going from 278 to 204 pounds changed much more than the number on the scale. It changed the way I think about discipline, patience, information, and personal responsibility.
I am still learning. I am still training. I am still improving. And when I share a research topic, I want to be clear about the line between published evidence, personal experience, and marketing hype.
